Hanks! Streep! Spielberg! The Post trailer has serious awards clout

screen-poster

How many movie legends is it possible to pack into one trailer? The new one for Steven Spielberg's The Post is positively dripping with awards favourites, pairing the legendary Saving Private Ryan director with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep for a timely and provocative real-life drama.

The movie recounts The Washington Post's dramatic battle to publish The Pentagon Papers, highly classified and incriminating documents that exposed the White House's lies over the Vietnam War.

With the American government moving hell and high water to suppress the story the Post's entire future hung in the balance, journalistic integrity pitted against the might of Washington. Hanks plays Post editor Ben Bradlee with Streep as their first female publisher, Kay Graham.

Co-written by Spotlight Oscar winner Josh Singer, himself a dab hand at turning the workings of journalism into cinema dynamite, the movie looks set to mix Spielberg's historical accuracy with his famed sense of pacing and tension. Well, with that central pairing, how on Earth can he go wrong?

The excellent supporting cast meanwhile features the likes of American Horror Story's Sarah Paulson, Get Out's Bradley Whitford and Better Call Saul's Bob Odenkirk. Need we list any more reasons why this has to go on your radar? Check out the trailer below.

The Post is released on 19th January 2018.
