The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug tops US box office


The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has stormed the American box office charts, knocking hit Disney animation Frozen off the number one spot.

The second film in Peter Jackson's Tolkien trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug grossed an impressive $73.7 million. The sheer might of Middle-earth melted any resistance from Frozen, which nevertheless has already amassed $164 million domestically.

"We are right on target to do very similar numbers to the last Hobbit, which grossed $1 billion worldwide," says Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros.
