Terminator: Dark Fate – everything we know about the Terminator sequel and where it fits in the Skynet timeline

screen-poster

After years of sequels that haven’t been necessarily loved by critics and fans, this year the Terminator franchise returns this year with Terminator: Dark Fate.

We're getting things started by breaking down everything we know about the film so far, and where it fits in the Terminator chronology.

What is the story of Terminator: Dark Fate?

Terminator: Dark Fate is set 27 years after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, in which Sarah Connor and her 10-year-old son John fought a T-1000 Terminator sent back in time by A:I Skynet to kill the boy.

Fast-forward to Dark Fate, and Dani Ramos is targeted by a new model of Terminator, the Rev-9. These new characters can switch between their human-like appearances and their Terminator skeleton, and pose an even more significant threat than their predecessors.

However, Dani is protected by Grace, a hybrid cyborg – and monumentally, they’re also shielded by the returning Sarah Connor and the original T-800 Terminator. Together, the only way to secure the future of mankind is to keep Dani alive.

Who stars in Terminator: Dark Fate?

Linda Hamilton is back as the iconic badass Sarah Connor, her first appearance as the character since Judgment Day back in 1991. After surviving numerous Terminators in her time, Sarah sees herself in Dani and is prepared to help fight for her.

Of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as the T-800, known in this film as the Model 101 but Black Mirror’s Mackenzie Davis is the main robotic helper, playing Grace, a human and machine hybrid who is sent back from the future to protect Dani from a new, much more advanced Terminator.

Dani herself is portrayed by screen newcomer Natalia Reyes, whose life is threatened when the new Terminator is sent to terminate her. We don’t know why the Terminator wants to kill her yet, but we’re sure there is some link with her helping John Connor’s future war against the machines.

Gabriel Luna is Rev-9, the new Terminator who is sent back in time with Dani as their target. Like previous Terminator models, Rev-9’s outer appearance mimics people with skin and other human-like details, while inside they have a solid endoskeleton. Unlike previous Terminators, though, Rev-9 can split their skeleton and skin into two separate elements, making two dangerous Terminator weapons and a harder job for Grace to fight against.

As for the role of John, it’s been confirmed that T2's Edward Furlong will return as the character. Cameron confirmed the news at Comic-Con 2019 via video message, reports Empire.

Where does Terminator: Dark Fate take place in the Terminator timeline?

Terminator: Dark Fate is directed by Deadpool’s Tim Miller and written and produced by series godfather James Cameron. It serves as a direct sequel to T2, directed by Cameron and considered one of the greatest sci-fi action movies of all time. Everything else in the franchise from Terminator 3 onwards has been discarded in favour of a continuation of the original mythology.

Is Terminator: Dark Fate hosting a panel at the 2019 Comic-Con?
