Guardians Vol. 2 and more in this week's superhero movie news round-up

It's been a busy week of news from the old comic book front. We've rounded up the essentials so you don't have to.

Guardians Vol. 2 post-credit scenes

It turns out the upcoming Guardians sequel will have not one, not two, but five post-credits scenes. Don't believe us? Director James Gunn confirmed it on Twitter, in response to Screen Rant's claim that there were in fact four.

It's the latest upgrade in the Marvel formula: 2008's Iron Man first popularised the idea with the climactic appearance of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) before Joss Whedon's Avengers Assemble in 2012 tweaked it to include both a mid-credit and post-credit scene.

Five sounds like an awful lot though. Can we assume they'll be playing down the side of the screen as the credits roll?

James Gunn will be back for Guardians Vol. 3

Having steered the first movie to enormous success and with advance word on the sequel proving extremely enthusiastic, we couldn't be happier that Gunn will be back to finish the trilogy of films that he started. He confirmed the news via Facebook – read his Guardians Vol. 3 statement here.

Guardians Vol. 3 will be the end of the original team

Who could have predicted back in early 2014 that a superhero crew comprising, among others, a walking, talking racoon and an endearing walking tree, would go down as some of our favourite characters of all time?

Well make the most of them because Gunn has said the Guardians' journey will be coming to an end with the third movie. When pressed on the subject by Screen Rant he answered: "It means it’s the end of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy."

How is it possible to top the infectiously sweet and uproariously entertaining nature of the original movie? Well early word indicates that the sequel has achieved the impossible. Check out the Guardians Vol. 2 reactions.

Taiki Waititi on his Thor: Ragnarok role

It's not all about the Guardians sequel this week. Later in the year we'll be treated to the third Thor movie courtesy of brilliant director Taiki Waititi, the man responsible for hilarious comedy hits What We Do In The Shadows and last year's Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Waititi has a habit of not just helming his own movies but also making memorable appearances within them, too. And his Thor: Ragnarok role is set to be a doozy, the filmmaker donning the motion capture suit to play alien Korg, an eight-foot-tall character made of rocks whose a regular in the Planet Hulk comics.

"We wanted to change the idea of the obvious choice of how the character would sound – he’s huge and heavy but he has a very light soul," Waititi told the LA Times during a tour of the Marvel Studios offices. "Obviously, being made of rocks, we would have gotten someone like the Rock to play him, but there wasn’t enough chicken or salmon in Australia to sustain both him and Chris. So we got the next best thing, which is this super hot young character actor named Taika Waititi, who I’ve personally come to love. As a director, I just found I had just all the time in the world for him and I wanted to give him take after take."
