One of the biggest trailers unveiled at last weekend’s San Diego Comic Con was Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg’s pumped-up adaptation of the bestselling novel by Ernest Cline.
Set in a near-future where Virtual Reality is commonplace, Ready Player One tells the story of teenager Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) who, as part of a generation known as the missing millions, finds solace in a virtual world known as OASIS. In this world, it’s possible to meet the Iron Giant and fight Freddy Krueger.
Filled with 80s and 90s Easter Eggs, the trailer is a veritable treasure trove of pop culture ephemera. Here’s what we noticed…
Deathstroke and Harley Quinn
Warner Bros (the studio behind Ready Player One) also own DC Comics, so they have their pick of all of DC's superheroes and villains. Making a brief appearance here is Deathstroke, a mercenary who’s appeared in the recent Arrow TV series, and Harley Quinn, the Joker’s psychotic girlfriend, played in Suicide Squad by Margot Robbie.
The Iron Giant
An animated character so iconic that he’s recognisable even from a silhouette, the Iron Giant makes his first big screen appearance since 1999 in Ready Player One. Spielberg has said that the Giant plays a major role in the film, but there's no word yet on whether Vin Diesel will be returning to voice him.
Not just any Delorean, but THE Delorean, Marty McFly’s time-travelling car from 80s classic Back to the Future. Given that Spielberg was producer on the 1985 movie, we don’t imagine he had to ask for permission with this one…
Hail to the King, baby! 90s retro gamers are poised to squeal in delight at the appearance of the wisecracking, first person shooter, who appears in Spielberg's movie as an avatar.
In this Virtual Reality world, it appears that one of the movie’s heroes is doing battle with an army of antagonists, including 80s horror icon Freddy Krueger. Rather you than us, mate!
Look closely and you’ll see the famous outline of Lara Croft leaning on a red car (the one on the right). Whether or not she’ll make a proper appearance or whether this is a Easter Egg-like cameo, we don’t know. Fingers crossed for the former though!

Ready Player One is due in US cinemas on 30th March 2018. We'll let you know if the UK release date differs.
