BB-9E: everything we know about The Last Jedi's shiny new droid

There are lots of questions circulating around new Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi. Where has Luke Skywalker been? Has he turned to the Dark Side? Who is Supreme Leader Snoke? And, most importantly, who is the film's new BB unit?

That's right, The Last Jedi unleashes a new counterpart to the adorable Force Awakens scene-stealer BB-9. Only this droid isn't quite so cuddly or loveable. Here's what we know.

Who is BB-9E?

According to, the rotund new addition to The Last Jedi is a droid in the employ of the evil First Order.

We got a good look at the new astromech droid during Force Friday's merchandise reveal, which gave us a clear indication of his dark-plated body and angular head – in direct opposition to the more innocent BB-8. That malevolent red LED light also doesn't give us good vibes.

As revealed via the new Sphero augmented reality app, BB-9E serves aboard the First Order Star Destroyer named Supremacy.

So he isn't good then?

Far from it. In fact, as this Star Wars Blips video shows, BB-8 runs into problems when trying to make friends with his First Order counterpart, whose body language and communicative sounds indicate a far more hostile presence.

He can't be that hateable, can he?

Don't count on it – director Rian Johnson says his nickname on set was 'BB-H8'. Harsh, but we imagine truthful.

Just be thankful we didn't stick with his obscenely adorable on set nickname, BB-H8

IS BB-9E the only new droid to feature?

Actually, no. We've got the return of old favourites BB-9 and R2-D2 but we're also going to be introduced to some other BB units who play a key role in the Resistance effort against the First Order.

The following Sphero image reveals BB-2 and BB-4 units, older models who nevertheless play an active role in maintaining Resistance ships like the X-Wings.
