News! A Shazam! sequel is in the works

You just can't argue with a boatload of critical acclaim and box office dosh. DC comic book adventure Shazam! has won over critics and audiences with its infectiously upbeat nature, steering the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) into more overtly lighthearted territory.

Against a $100 million budget, the movie has now grossed upwards of $250 million worldwide, reports Box Office Mojo. Not bad at all for a movie that's only been out for two weeks and drawing on a relatively obscure DC character.

The film stars Chuck and Tangled's Zachary Levi as the invulnerable superhero Shazam – actually 14-year-old orphan Billy Batson (Asher Angel) in disguise. The movie builds to Shazam's battle with the villainous Dr Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) and, perhaps inevitably, anticipates future adventures.

Well good news for fans, because a sequel is in the works, according to The Wrap. No specific details are forthcoming, although website iO9 indicates that screenwriter Henry Gayden will return. They also suggest that studio Warner Bros are keen for the return of director David F. Sandberg, previously best known for horror hits like Annabelle: Creation.

One images the Shazam! sequel will introduce the character of Black Adam, an infamous nemesis character from the original comics. Dwayne Johnson has been attached to play the character since 2014, so could we potentially be looking at a Levi-Johnson face-off?

Even if that weren't to happen, the Shazam! credits scenes do more than enough to tease an expanding movie universe. Of course, we won't spoil it for those who haven't yet seen the movie. (Those who have can click the link below for more info.)
