San Diego Comic Con 2017: what to look out for

screen-poster

The biggest event on the geek calendar kicked off yesterday with a sensational Kingsman: The Golden Circle panel (where star Halle Berry apparently downed a half-pint of whisky. Go, Halle!).

But what other movie highlights are planned for the four-day extravaganza? Here’s our rundown of the things to look out for…

Blade Runner 2049 (Saturday)

One of the most anticipated panels of the weekend, stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Robin Wright are expected to take to the stage to talk about the sequel to one of sci-fi cinema’s most bulletproof classics.

Given that a second trailer hit last week, it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing any fresh footage, but we ARE hoping for a few juicy pre-release spoilers…

Justice League (Saturday)

Four of the five members of DC’s answer to the Avengers appear on Saturday when Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller (no Henry Cavill, we notice) will take to the Comic Con stage.

Will new director Joss Whedon be making an appearance (the Avengers Assemble helmer took over the project from Zack Snyder who left the project for personal reasons) and will there be any clips shown? After the amazing success of Wonder Woman, fans are more excited than ever about this team-up of DC’s greatest superheroes…

Ready Player One (Saturday)

Steven Spielberg’s new film, based on the 2011 virtual reality novel, hasn’t even dropped a trailer yet, so hopes are high that we’ll have our first glimpse of the movie this Saturday.

What MIGHT we see?

An Avengers: Infinity War trailer

We’d be amazed if Marvel didn’t take this opportunity to drop a trailer for the must-see movie of 2018. Filming wrapped earlier this year, but so far all we’ve had is this Making Of video. Hopefully we’ll see some real footage of the movie this weekend. (Fingers crossed it has some of the Guardians of the Galaxy in it!)

An Ocean’s Eight trailer

Rumours are that Warner Bros will be unveiling a trailer for this hotly-awaited Ocean’s Eleven spin-off/sequel.

Boasting an all-star cast including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham-Carter, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, James Corden and Matt Damon, this sees Danny Ocean’s sister Debbie assembling her own (all women) crew to pull off the heist of the century at New York City’s star-studded annual Met Gala.

A Tomb Raider trailer

Warner Bros are definitely doing a presentation at Comic Con this year and we’ve got our fingers and toes crossed for a first-glimpse at the Alicia Vikander-fronted Tomb Raider reboot.

Yes, the Academy Award-winning actress will be taking on the role of the uber-posh English archaeologist from Angelina Jolie, and we may be – MAY BE – getting our first sight of her in character this weekend.

A Deadpool 2 trailer

There’s no more Comic Con movie than Deadpool 2. Walk around the exhibition centre in San Diego and you’ll see dozens, possibly hundreds, of cos-playing Deadpools walking around.

With that in mind, might Fox use this Comic Con to drop the first trailer for the sequel? It’s not out until June next year, but studios increasingly now unveil trailers a whole year before a movie is out. So will we get our first glimpse of Josh Brolin as Deadpool’s new adversary, Cable? We can but hope.
