Director Roland Emmerich isn't known for holding back – this is the guy behind Independence Day and The Patriot, remember. And true to his word, his new movie Midway cranks up the thunderous spectacle and popcorn thrills.
The movie is a World War II drama that takes place six months after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbour. In the words of the official synopsis: "Midway is the epic, real-life saga about an undermanned American fleet and the brave Navy leaders and pilots who triumphed, against the odds, over a powerful adversary. With democracy and freedom at stake, these U.S. brothers-in-arms conquered the Imperial Japanese Navy at the Battle of Midway, a most stunning clash by air and sea which marked a heroic feat of naval warfare and pivoted the Allies toward victory in the Pacific Theatre during WWII."
The large ensemble cast mixes a host of rising stars and established faces. Deadpool's Ed Skrein and Beauty and the Beast's Luke Evans join the likes of Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), Joe Jonas (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes).
