First look: Mary Poppins Returns gets a trailer

We often write about sequels that are years in the making. But Disney's Mary Poppins Returns is the real deal, the 2018 follow-up to the celebrated 1964 family classic.

Now, 54 years on from chalk pavement pictures, dancing penguins and Dick van Dyke's lamentable Cockney accent, we're now presented with a brand new Mary in the form of Oscar nominee Emily Blunt. She takes over from the role's original incumbent Julie Andrews for another round of Disney magic, this time under the direction of Chicago's Rob Marshall.

The familiar, nostalgic hallmarks are on display in the first trailer: the ship atop the house, the ever-present kite (this time harnessed by Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda) and that iconic shot of Mary emerging out of the clouds holding onto her trusty umbrella. It's suitably spine-tingling stuff, and the brief sign-off from Blunt looks to have distilled that elusive sense of Julie Andrews artistry.

We only get the briefest of glimpses at Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer as the now grown-up Banks children, whom Mary is once again looking to help. Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Julie Walters (all currently unseen) round out the starry cast. Check out the trailer below.
