The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reaches an epic climax in the battle between good and evil in this April's Avengers: Infinity War. It's the culmination of a franchise we've lived with for 10 years, ever since the first Iron Man soared onto our screens in 2008.
At the same time, we ought to acknowledge that none of this would have been possible without the creative genius of Marvel godfather Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and countless other iconic heroes.
And Lee hasn't just made his impact on the printed page. He's also made sly cameo appearances in every MCU movie so far. We've rounded them up for your reading pleasure.
Iron Man (2008)
Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) makes his entrance at a lavish event with typically charismatic swagger. As paparazzi surround Tony as he walks the red carpet, he hilariously mistakes Stan Lee for porn mogul Hugh Hefner as he pats him on the back.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Unlike his appearance in Iron Man, which is played for laughs, Lee's appearance in The Incredible Hulk actually drives the plot forward. After he's poisoned by green soda, the authorities track Bruce Banner/Hulk (Edward Norton) to a bottling plant in Brazil, and an international pursuit begins.
Iron Man 2 (2010)
If Lee's Iron Man 2 cameo is anything to go by, Tony Stark probably needs his personal assistant to remind him who he is talking to. Having mistaken Lee for Hugh Hefner in the first movie, he then mistakes him for chat show host Larry King as he makes his way through a packed crowd at the Stark Expo.
A lot of great comedy moments have come from the various characters, both mortal and immortal, who have tried to lift Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) hammer. Like most of them, Lee comes off the worse, appearing as a truck driver attempting the impossible – with hilarious consequences.
Lee has twice been mistaken for someone else by Tony Stark. But in Captain America: The First Avenger it is he who mistakes someone else for Captain America (Chris Evans), remarking, "I'd thought he'd be taller."
Avengers Assemble (2012)
In one of Lee's most meta and self-referential turns, the man responsible for the creation of the Avengers appears to dismiss their existence. Lee turns up during a news report segment, exclaiming, "Superheroes in New York – give me a break!"
Iron Man 3 (2013)
In Tony Stark's third and final standalone Iron Man adventure, Lee appears briefly on a television set as a beauty pageant judge, giving a contestant a score of 10. (We're sure that's what he'd award all the movies too, right?)
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Another scene in which Lee's comic timing is put to good use. In this scene, professor Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) is giving a scientific demonstration to some patients on a mental ward using two shoes as props. After he ends the demonstration and asks if anyone has any questions, Lee replies, "Can I have my shoe back?"
In this scene, Lee proves why he is a better comic book writer than he is a security guard. Following Captain America's successful heist at the Smithsonian, during which time he reclaims his classic suit, Lee realises it is missing and says, "Oh man, I am so fired."
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Lee appears to be quite the ladies' man, seen surrounded by beautiful women on the planet of Xandar. This does not go unnoticed by Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) who calls him a "class-A pervert." Now we know we know why he was mistaken for Hugh Hefner in Iron Man.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
If Lee didn't have much luck with Thor's hammer, he suffered even more after drinking some of his liquor in Joss Whedon's Avengers sequel. Lee plays a war veteran who taunts Thor into letting him have some of his Asgardian liquor. It does not end well as, after drinking some, Lee is drunkenly escorted from the party.
While Paul Rudd makes his debut as shrinking superhero Scott Lang, Lee turns up looking slick as a bartender. It's all part of a lengthy and hilarious cutaway scene, recounted by Lang's fast-talking criminal friend Luis (Michael Pena).
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
After presumably being fired from his security guard post in the previous Captain America movie, Lee tries his hand at being a delivery man in Captain America: Civil War. He brilliantly knocks on the door and says he's looking for a "Mr. Tony Stank".
Doctor Strange (2016)
Another scene in which Lee is completely oblivious to all the mayhem unfolding around him. Reality is bending and out of control as a result of Stephen Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) abilities, but all Lee wants to do is read is book while sat on a bus.
This cameo fuels the popular fan theory that all Lee's cameos to date have been as the same person. Enjoying a conversation with ancient intergalactic species the Watchers, Lee references a few of his previous movie cameos. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige later confirmed the connection.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
As a car alarm screeches, Lee appears as an annoyed neighbour yelling at Spider-Man (Tom Holland) to keep it down. He then catches the eye of another neighbour and seems to flirt with her.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
In Taika Waititi's wonderfully off-the-wall Thor movie, it's Lee who shows up to cut Thor's iconic long blonde hair. It's a terrific scene that we could watch over and over again, and one that introduces us to the God of Thunder's brand-new look.
Black Panther (2018)
Marvel's latest is currently shattering box office records around the world, and yes, Lee makes an appearance. When Wakanda's King T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) attempts to ensnare arms dealer Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) in a Busan casino, chaos erupts. Lee then manages to steal T'Challa's winnings while our hero attempts to save the day.
