Avengers: Infinity War baddie Thanos, aka the Mad Titan (Josh Brolin), is all set to become the deadliest villain yet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In pursuit of the Infinity Stones that will help him balance the universe and obliterate the Avengers, he's even set to put antagonists Loki and Ultron to shame.
But although Thanos may wield some serious clout, his purple skin pales in comparison to some of Marvel's other creations. Here are five Marvel characters who are, amazingly, even more powerful than he is.
Thanos conquers worlds, but Galactus eats them for breakfast – literally. He is so powerful, he can end a whole planet with a simple click of the fingers using the Power Cosmic (which essentially grants the user limitless god-like power). He's also older than the universe itself and can manipulate his size to become larger than the worlds he destroys. Thanos and Galactus have fought extensively in the Marvel comics, and although Thanos has emerged victorious in the past – perhaps most hilariously after a battle initiated when he destroyed a planet Galactus was eyeing up – Galactus usually has the last laugh.
Galactus may be older than the universe, but Eternity is the actual embodiment of the entire multiverse (aka all the various Marvel universes grouped together). He's immortal, near-omnipotent (so pretty much all-powerful), and has an unlimited ability to manipulate time, space, matter, energy, magic and reality. So yeah, he's pretty strong. Eternity typically only appears when a significant threat to a universe arises. Might he make an appearance in Infinity War and its sequel then?
3. The Living Tribunal
What could be more powerful than the living embodiment of the universe itself? The protector of the multiverse, of course! The four-faced Living Tribunal is just that, and his main role is to ensure the multiverse is kept in balance by ensuring no single universe accrues more power than any other – talk about a hard job. The Living Tribunal is basically judge, jury and executioner of the Marvel universe, sentencing the big bads to their ultimate doom. So, if Thanos isn't yet shaking in those shiny golden boots of his, he soon will be.
4. The Beyonder
Surely there's nothing more powerful than the protector of the multiverse? Well, the Living Tribunal exists for a reason. Hailing from an infinite realm outside of the multiverse, the Beyonder is nigh-omnipotent, has the power to manipulate reality and can cause multiverse-wide destruction should he wish. He's also both an inhuman and a mutant, which is partly why he's able to display such unfathomable power. The Beyonder is so powerful, he probably wouldn't even concern himself with puny insects such as Thanos.
5. The One Above All
While some of the other beings on this list might be almost omnipotent, the One-Above-All actually is omnipotent. In addition, the One-Above-All is omniscient (all-knowing) and omnipresent (everywhere), so can pretty much do what he wants, whenever he wants, wherever he wants – which is kind of what you'd expect considering he's responsible for the creation of the universe, multiverse and everything in between. He's also widely believed to represent Marvel creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby – even taking the form of Kirby in one of the Fantastic Four Comics. Quite fitting, really. Luckily for Thanos, though, the One-Above-All doesn't really concern himself with his creations, instead choosing to watch passively from the sidelines.
