Loved Churchill? Then don’t miss Dunkirk!

With Churchill now on release, has it got you in a WWII mood and wanting more? Then look no further than Christopher Nolan’s new war epic Dunkirk

A blockbuster with heart

Brit director Christopher Nolan (the Dark Knight trilogy, The Prestige, Interstellar) has a reputation for crafting thoughtful, CGI-lite blockbusters, and now he turns his attentions to one of the most crucial moments of the Second World War, when more than 300,000 Allied soldiers, trapped on the shores of northern France and surrounded by German troops, miraculously escaped across the English Channel.

An all-star cast

With a cast that includes such stellar names as Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy Cillian Murphy and – amazingly – Harry Styles, this inspirational epic will surely stir the heart and wow the eyes.

A survival story

“It's a survival story first and foremost,” Nolan says. “So while there is a high level of intensity to it, it does not necessarily concern itself with the bloody aspects of combat, which have been so well done in so many films."

An ambitious epic

Don’t go expecting a small-scale tale here. Nolan’s film is set to tell the story of one of the most important moments of WWII from every angle.

“The film is told from three points of view: The air, the land and the sea,” the director says. “For the soldiers embarked in the conflict, the events took place on different temporalities. To mingle these different versions of history, one had to mix the temporal strata. Hence the complicated structure!”

Dunkirk hits Cineworld on 21 July.
