5 Jurassic World questions we need answers to in Fallen Kingdom

After devouring the worldwide box office back in 2015, it was inevitable Jurassic World would be getting a sequel. Fast forward to this year's Fallen Kingdom, and it’s almost time for us to be reunited with Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard).

Set four years after the events of the previous film, Fallen Kingdom sees a role reversal of sorts, as our heroes must now work to rescue the dinosaurs instead of running from them. As the full synopsis explains: "It’s been four years since theme park and luxury resort Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles. When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event."

The synopsis certainly leaves us wanting more, but there are a few unanswered questions that we’re hoping will be cleared up. Have any of these been plaguing you?

1. Why are they back in the park?

Sure, the synopsis explains the literal reason for Owen and Claire returning to the park. What we want to know is, how can they bear to be back there? But let’s not forget, in Jurassic World Owen had imprinted on the velociraptors from birth, namely lead raptor Blue (who re-appears in the sequel), and so we can’t say we’re surprised that they’re unwilling to let our prehistoric ancestors go without a fight.

2. What is the conspiracy?

This being a Jurassic Park movie, it's only natural there's a conspiracy that once again threatens to put humankind and dinosaur on a collision course. The trailer implies that some shifty corporate suits played by Toby Jones and Rafe Spall are involved, but the exact details remain hazy. Is it the new genetically modified dinosaur glimpsed in the trailer? The potential extinction of the dinosaurs? Or something else entirely? We can’t work it out, but the good news is we only have a few short months to wait until the answer is revealed.

3. What is Blue’s role?

Blue and Owen have shared a strong connection for many years. While this was tested in Jurassic World, Blue proved her continuing loyalty to Owen when she fought against the Indominus rex in order to save him and the other dinosaurs. This time around, the pair seem to have another significant plot line, with Owen fighting for the beast's survival. There also appear to be flashback sequences taking us back to the moment on which she was first imprinted. Will Owen succeed? We’d like to think so but either way the bond between the two is something we want to see more of.

4. How does Jeff Goldblum fit in?

Goldblum’s return as fan favourite Ian Malcolm in the film has been the source of much excitement – no real surprise given his massive impact during the first two movies. But what is he doing? From what we’ve seen so far, it’s safe to assume that Ian is not one of those venturing back to the park, and instead appears to play a part in courtroom sequences. The discussion seems to be about the fate of the dinosaurs: namely, should they be left to die? But what side is he on? Ian has more reason than most to be wary, but the suggestion that he might be advocating their demise hurts our hearts a little bit.

5. Who created the new dinosaur?

The trailer released during the recent Super Bowl gives us our first glimpse at a brand new dinosaur, and enough reason to give us nightmares for days. It turns out dinos now have the ability to hunt you while you sleep, or at least this new hybrid does. The concept of the hybrid was introduced back in Jurassic World with the Indominus rex, and yet nothing seems as terrifying as this new creation. But who created it? Can you imagine waking up to this monster in the middle of the night?
