Jojo Rabbit: Cineworld Unlimited screening this December

Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi returns with irreverent and controversial World War II comedy Jojo Rabbit. And Cineworld Unlimited members get to watch it in advance this December.

Waititi directs and stars in this surreal adaptation of Christine Leunens' novel Caging Skies. The story centres on the eponymous Jojo 'Rabbit' Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis), a young boy in the Hitler Youth who imagines the notorious Nazi dictator (played by Waititi) as his best friend.

At the same time, Jojo's loving mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) is sheltering young Jewish girl Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Will young Jojo be guided by nationalistic fervour, or will he find sympathy for the Jews in the midst of one of the darkest periods in human history?

Waititi's latest is an all-star blend of broad comedy and sombre reflection, clad in all the eccentric humour recognisable from cult hits What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Scene-stealing support comes from Sam Rockwell, Stephen Merchant and Rebel Wilson as buffoonish Nazi officials.

The film won the audience award at the Toronto Film Festival, even though the subsequent critical reaction has veered between the ecstatic and the confused. That means only one thing: you simply have to watch the movie to make up your own mind.
