John Wick's superb opening weekend knocks Avengers from top box office spot

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum kicked off with an incredible opening weekend - $57 million in the US box office and $92 million worldwide.

These epic numbers have finally dethroned Avengers: Endgame after the Marvel juggernaut spent three weeks at number one.

Deadline points out that this is the biggest opening weekend for Parabellum studio Lionsgate outside of their Hunger Games quartet and the final Twilight sequel (Breaking Dawn Part II). The threequel outpaced both the previous John Wick films too - Chapter 2 opened with $30.4 million in 2017.

The Avengers is still going strong, powering past Avatar's US total with over $770 million million and climbing to $2.6 billion overall. That's closer to Avatar's global total of $2.78 billion and the top-grossing film of all time, but the momentum does seem to be slowing.

For John Wick, this success makes a fourth film in the surprise franchise all the more likely. This time round, Reeves's stylishly appointed killer is now ex-communicado from the criminal underworld, which means that every hitman (and woman) in the world is out to get him as he seeks passage out of New York. The film also stars Halle Berry and Laurence Fishburne.
