IT scares up a box office storm

The world went wild for Pennywise the dancing clown this weekend as IT re-ignited the flagging box office.

The critically acclaimed Stephen King adaptation terrified moviegoers to the tune of $179 million globally, according to figures from Box Office Mojo.

The film has smashed records – in fact, in posted the third-largest domestic opening weekend of the year after making its debut to the tune of $117m. That's on an even keel with Marvel blockbuster Spider-Man: Homecoming.

IT also destroyed previous domestic September record holders Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.5m) and Paranormal Activity 3 ($52.6m).

The movie has obliterated its $35m budget, so it's no surprise to learn that screenwriter Gary Dauberman is hard at work on part 2 of the chilling King tale. The next instalment is due in 2019.
