The first reactions to Guardians Vol. 2 are in...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has yet to be released – it's out on 28th April – so don't go preparing for your epic Star Lord dance-off just yet. However the first reactions have started to trickle online, courtesy of an advance screening for American journalists that took place yesterday, and to say it's got a lot to live up to is an understatement.

The first Guardians came out of nowhere in July 2014 to make its mark as possibly the finest Marvel movie of them all: a pitch-perfect cocktail of self-aware humour, terrific action, memorable characters and a rocking soundtrack. Is there any way that Guardians 2 can possibly live up to this? Well let's find out from those journos lucky enough to have already watched it.

Collider's Steven Weintraub says the sequel doesn't so much live up to the original as exceed it. How's that for a strong start?

Fellow Collider writer Haleigh Foutch agrees.

Anna Klassen, formerly of the Buzzfeed parish, says the movie is a treat for those who loved the first film's deliriously entertaining soundtrack.

Slashfilm's Peter Sciretta says it's an across-the-board improvement on the first Guardians, and takes a cue from a certain key character.

Negative responses? In the interests of balance blogger Jeff Sneider says the movie fails to capture the charm of what went before.

Well those a just a smattering of responses. As for the rest of us, we'll have to make up our own minds when Guardians Vol. 2 is released on 28th April.
