The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) lightens up this April with the witty and warmhearted Shazam!, the story of a teenager who can transform into a comic book character.
Newcomer Asher Angel plays Billy Batson, an adolescent orphan who encounters an ancient sorcerer (Djimon Hounsou) named Shazam. Billy is then gifted with remarkable abilities: all he has to do is say the name Shazam out loud and he'll transform into his superhero alter-ego.
This character manifests as a suited, booted and infectiously wide-eyed adult (Thor's Zachary Levi) who revels in his abilities, including sending energy from his fingertips, x-ray vision and invulnerability to bullets.
Teaming up with new foster brother Freddy (IT's Jack Dylan Grazer), Billy/Shazam must take down the nefarious Dr Thaddeus Sivana (Kick-Ass's Mark Strong). Directed by Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation filmmaker David F. Sandberg, this looks to be an altogether more endearing and charming movie from a universe previously defined by doom and murk (although that did start to change with the recent Aquaman).
Go behind the scenes of the movie in the following video as Angel, Levi, Grazer and Sandberg explain why this is a very different kind of DC comic book movie. Shazam! is released on 5th April.
