We've come to expect great things from director Christopher Nolan, hardly a surprise given he revolutionised the comic book movie with his Dark Knight trilogy, sci-fi with Inception and outer-space adventure with Interstellar. Yet even in the midst of all those unforgettable blockbusters, his latest Dunkirk promises to be something special.
For one thing, there is nothing fantastical about the movie whatsoever: this is a salt-of-the-earth retelling of the infamous Battle of Dunkirk that took place in World War II from May to June 1940, in which the Allies narrowly staved off defeat from the encroaching Nazi forces. Nolan's return to human drama is exciting enough and when you factor in the starry cast including Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Harry Styles (yes, that one), it's little wonder this is being touted as one of 2017's biggest films.
