Classic Disney songs rebooted! #BeautyandtheBeast

screen-poster

You can't fail to have noticed at the end of the most recent Beauty and the Beast trailer, the spruced up take on the classic title song courtesy of John Legend and Ariana Grande.

It's one of many ways in which Disney's eagerly awaited live-action reboot is set to revitalise their classic 1991 animation, and it isn't the first time a Disney staple has been given the 21st century treatment. Here's our selection of the reworked Disney tunes that helped bring the magic to a new generation.

Once Upon a Dream

From: Maleficent (2014)

Performed by: Lana Del Rey

Superstar Angelina Jolie brought a touch of brooding Gothic darkness to this revisionist fairy tale, one recapping the classic Sleeping Beauty story from the perspective of its cackling yet tragic villain.

In-keeping with the tale's (relatively) moodier tone, breathy songstrel Lana Del Rey came onboard to encapsulate the tormented, haunted nature of Jolie's portrayal. It reached number 5 on the UK billboards chart.

Strong

From: Cinderella (2015)

Performed by: Sonna Rele

Kenneth Branagh's charming, sweet-natured Cinderella reboot stuck true to the spirit of the 1950s animation, albeit bolstering it around the edges courtesy of Lily James' more assertive heroine and a superb Cate Blanchett as the despicable yet nuanced Lady Tremaine.

Outside of Patrick Doyle's glorious score, it fell to RnB artist Sonna Rele to give the movie a contemporary kick in the form of her rousing 'Strong', an embodiment of feisty Cinderella's journey towards happiness.

The Bare Necessities

From: The Jungle Book (2016)

Performed by: Dr John and the Nite Trippers

Jon Favreau's celebrated take on one of Disney's most enduring classics boasted incredibly immersive CGI effects and a diverse soundtrack that reinterpreted several of the original movie's songs.

Signature number 'The Bare Necessities' got a groovy soul and funk reworking courtesy of American blues legend Dr. John aka the Nitetripper.

I Wanna Be Like You

From: The Jungle Book (2016)

Oobie doo! Taking over from original Louis voiceover Louis Prima is the one and only Christopher Walken whose off-kilter vocal mannerisms (can we even call it singing?) lend it a suitably quirky edge.

Where do you think the John Legend/Ariana Grande cover of Beauty and the Beast will rank? Let us know @Cineworld. The movie is out on 17th March.
