Angelina Jolie in talks to join Marvel's Eternals movie

This April, Avengers: Endgame caps off phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But what of the MCU's phase four period?

It remains shrouded in mystery, although one of the projects we can expect is the long-mooted The Eternals. And if rumours are to be believed, the movie will be getting an injection of star power courtesy of Angelina Jolie.

The Oscar-winning actor is in talks for the project, reports Deadline. Jolie is of course no stranger to fantastical epics, or indeed Disney movies – she helped spin dark 2014 reboot Maleficent into a blockbuster hit, and reprises her role in this year's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Given she's in talks, there are no details about Jolie's proposed role just yet, nor is there a confirmed release date. Deadline describes The Eternals as being about "near-immortal beings the Eternals and their more gargantuan antagonists the Deviants, who were created by the cosmic beings called Celestials".

The movie will be directed by Chloe Zhao, who helmed last year's atmospheric Western drama The Rider. She's working from a script by brothers Matthew and Ryan Firpo, and continues the trend of indie helmers tackling Marvel properties. Just recently, Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck steered Captain Marvel to enormous blockbuster success.

In the meantime, Avengers: Endgame reaches us on 25th April. Stay tuned to the blog for more details about Jolie's casting, and details about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
