Anchorman 2 reportedly set to overshadow original film during its box office opening weekend

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues grossed $8 million on its first day of release on Wednesday.

The figures come from Hollywood trade paper Variety, which reports that the film is on track to gross $30 million during its first three days. To put that into perspective, figures from Box Office Mojo show the original Anchorman opened to a $28 million haul during its opening weekend back in July 2004.

However, characters Ron Burgundy, Brian Fantana, Brick Tamland and Champ Kind were unknown quantities back then. The same can't be said of the sequel, which has seen Ron appear everywhere as part of an enormous marketing push. Not to mention that actors Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd (recently signed as the lead in Edgar Wright's Ant Man) and Steve Carell are now established stars.
