- 1. Most Believable Villain – Killmonger from Black Panther (Michael B. Jordan)
Jordan's chilling yet unexpectedly sympathetic antagonist Eric Killmonger was not just a threat to the sanctity of Wakanda. He also bore a legitimate claim to its throne. This made him the most engrossing and dangerous comic book baddie since Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.
- 2. Best Horror Performance – Toni Collette in Hereditary
Ari Aster's frightening feature film debut Hereditary is a family melodrama that descends into hell, resplendent in all manner of skin-crawling imagery. However, it's all given emotional ballast by Toni Collette's ferocious performance as the disintegrating mother beset by her own hideous genetic ancestry.
- 3. Best Epic Stunt Scene – Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Tom Cruise ought to win this category all on his own. Putting professional stunt-people to shame, the famously fearless star leaps off buildings and flies helicopters in the utterly riveting sixth Mission: Impossible movie. That helicopter stand-off in particular, culminating in a jaw-dropping barrel roll and cliff-top fight, is among the best action scenes of recent years.
- 4. Best Average Joe in a Movie – Peter from Deadpool 2 (Rob Delaney)
Ryan Reynolds faced scene-stealing competition in 2018's Deadpool sequel. No, not from the likes of Josh Brolin's fearsome Cable, but unassuming layman Peter (Rob Delaney) who becomes a vital, if short-lived, part of Deadpool's ill-fated X-Force team. Still, Peter's bravery gives hope for us all.
- 5. Best Crowd-Pleasing Moment – the Captain's arrival from Avengers: Infinity War
When Vision (Paul Bettany) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) are attacked by the forces of the evil Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Edinburgh, all seems lost. However, when an off-screen projectile is intercepted by a mysterious figure, subsequently revealed to be Captain America (Chris Evans), everything else is drowned out by our cheers. The surging strains of Alan Silvestri's Avengers theme only make it more triumphant.
- 6. Best Meta-Joke – DC Universe from Deadpool 2
The quick-witted Merc with a Mouth busts down that pesky fourth wall again with a side-splitting jibe at a rival comic book realm. (Remember, as Once Upon a Deadpool reminded us, Mr Pool is very much a Marvel character.)
- 7. Best Romantic Couple – Nick and Rachel from Crazy Rich Asians
Romantic comedy-drama Crazy Rich Asians was pioneering in its own way, showcasing the first all-Asian cast in a Hollywood movie for 25 years. Key to its appeal was the central relationship between the duo of Nick (a breakout Henry Golding) and Rachel (Constance Wu). Beset by family tensions and economic class divides on all sides, they finally make it work, and win our hearts in the process.
- 8. Most Terrifying Monster – the creatures from A Quiet Place
John Krasinski's brilliantly accomplished chiller A Quiet Place melded creature feature thrills with one of the most arresting soundscapes of any 2018 movie. By deploying silence as a dramatic device, the dividing line between life and death, he reminds us of how cluttered and noisy so many contemporary films are. It also serves to make its monstrous villains all the more petrifying.
