Donnie Yen, Takeshi Kaneshiro
Martial arts maestro Donnie Yen unleashes some breathtaking moves in this stylish martial arts bone-cruncher! In a small town in China's Yunnan province during the early 20th century, two bad guys attempt to hold up the general store. Humble papermaker and family man Liu Jin-xi (Donnie Yen) intervenes, killing both felons without leaving a mark on their bodies. Liu Jin-xi insists he was just lucky. But investigating detective Xu Baijiu (Takeshi Kaneshiro) is not convinced that evil bandits could be dispatched so easily by such a mild-mannered and public-spirited citizen. Using his detailed knowledge of martial arts and early forensic science, he concludes that Liu Jin-xi must be a trained assassin in hiding! If the plot seems familiar, that's because director Peter Chan has cleverly transposed David Cronenberg's masterpiece 'A History of Violence' to turn-of-the-century China. This gives the super-slick slo-mo and breathtakingly choreographed, high-kicking fight scenes a rare dramatic depth.
