Synopsis

A powerful drama about two teenage girls growing up against the backdrop of the Cold War and sexual revolution. London, 1962. Ginger (Elle Fanning) and Rosa (Alice Englert) have been best friends since childhood. As teenagers, they're determined not to end up like their mothers. Rosa has been quick to discover boys. Sensitive poet Ginger is traumatised by the prospect of nuclear Armageddon as the Cuban Missile Crisis looms, and decides to become an activist. Her charming yet philandering pacifist lecturer dad Roland (Alessandro Nivola) encourages her radicalism. But when Rosa takes a shine to him, Ginger's world threatens to fall apart. Lauded British director Sally Potter brilliantly draws on her own experiences to conjure up the pre-swinging sixties in this intense, beautifully filmed coming-of-age drama. The outstanding supporting cast includes Annette Bening as an American feminist, Christina Hendricks as Ginger's mum, and Oliver Platt and Timothy Spall as her godfathers - both called Mark!
