Canakkle 1915 (12A)
Synopsis
An epic, gripping dramatisation of one of the key battles in Turkish military history. During the Balkan war of 1912, the Ottomans suffer a major defeat. With Rumelia lost, migrants make their way to Istanbul and Anatolia. But this prompts a new wave of nationalism. As World War I commences, the young are conscripted throughout Anatolia. Among them are Veli and Mehmet Ali. 'Canakkale 1915' traces the young soldiers' journey as they join the 19th Division. It is here that they take part in one of the greatest fights in military history: the battle of Canakkale (Gallipoli in English). Yesim Sezgin's adaptation of Turgut Ozakman's bestselling novel 'Dirilis Canakkale 1915' recreates the epic land and sea campaign. This was waged by the British and French to capture Istanbul and secure access to Russia. Its failure is seen as one of the greatest Turkish victories of all time, although there were heavy casualties on both sides.
