The Master (15)
Synopsis
A dazzling portrait of a cult leader and his pupil from the director of 'There Will Be Blood'. In the years after WWII, a generation of ex-military drifters are seeking ways to re-integrate with society. One of these is troubled Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), a Navy veteran with a drink problem and a nervous condition. The itinerant Freddie eventually stumbles aboard a classy ship bound for New York. Here he encounters Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the charismatic intellectual leader of a religious cult called The Cause. Dodd provides Freddie with the guidance he craves and the two men strike up a powerful mentor/pupil relationship. But then Dodd's mini-me son Val (Jesse Plemons) tells Freddie that his father is just making up his teachings as he goes along. This provokes a major crisis. Visionary director Paul Thomas Anderson's stunning, multi-faceted follow-up to 'There Will Be Blood' is one of the most talked-about movies of the year.
