Swan Lake - 23/10/2012 (12A)
The ROH's 2012/13 live cinema season opens with Anthony Dowell's production of the greatest of all romantic ballets. Poorly received on its premiere back in 1877, Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake' went on to become one of the world's most popular ballets. It has been reinterpreted on many occasions, most recently in Matthew Bourne's revolutionary production. 'Swan Lake' has also crossed over into popular culture, the latest example being the Oscar-winning 2010 thriller 'Black Swan'. For this 1987 production, Anthony Dowell took the great ballet in the opposite direction. His aim was to return to a version of the choreography originally created by the great Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895. Missing dances are restored and later additions stripped away. Yolanda Sonnabend's inspired designs draw on the Russian Imperial Court of the period, blending historical accuracy and gothic fantasy. The magical setting is further evoked by Faberge-inspired opulence, with glowing lanterns and shimmering fabrics. Swan Lake is part of the Royal Opera House 2012-2013 Live Cinema Season.
