The Tempest - 10/11/2012 (12A)
Synopsis
British composer Thomas Ades makes his Met Opera debut conducting his own modern masterpiece. Boasting a libretto adapted from Shakespeare's play by dramatist Meredith Oakes, Thomas Ades' second opera premiered at the Royal Opera House back in 2004. Enormous success and critical acclaim followed, and 'The Tempest' was subsequently revived at Covent Garden in 2007. Three years later, a recording of the opera won Ades Composer of the Year at the Classical Brits. Now he makes his debut at the prestigious Met Opera, conducting Robert Lepage's innovative production. This recreates the interior of the La Scala opera house as the magical island venue for the otherworldly arts of Prospero. Simon Keenlyside sings Prospero, as he did so brilliantly in Covent Garden. "The opera captures the magic of Shakespeare's last play," enthuses Lepage. "It is a box full of magic tricks, which makes it a gift for me and for the designers."
