Synopsis

The Met Opera's seventh 'Live in HD' season launches with a new production of Donizetti's comic gem. Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti's most frequently performed work is also renowned as one of the greatest of all comic operas. In her second consecutive Met opening night, Anna Netrebko plays the beautiful Adina - a wealthy 19th century landowner. Simple village peasant Nemorino (Matthew Polenzani) worships her from afar, but has nothing to offer but his love. Despite being swaggering and conceited, rival suitor Sergeant Belcore (Mariusz Kwiecien) seems to amuse Anna. When travelling quack Doctor Dulcamara (Ambrogio Maestri) arrives in the village, Nemorino purchases what he believes to be an elixir of love. Little does he realise that he's actually been sold a common or garden bottle of Bordeaux! Bartlett Sher's production of this much-loved classic offers terrific entertainment while hinting at the political climate in which it was written.
