Alan Bennett's new play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. Alan Bennett's new play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion's spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

Auden often said that metre and rhyme led him down unexpected paths to thoughts he wouldn't otherwise have had, and in this respect versification and fornication are not so different.

Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station.

You are a rent boy. I am a poet. Over the wall lives the Dean of Christ Church. We all have our parts to play.

Maurice Sendak's classic picture book about a boisterous little boy who imagines himself king of a tribe of Wild Things is here brought magically to life by hip, maverick director Spike Jonze. Combining real actors, live puppetry, computer animation and the stunning rugged southern coast of Australia (standing in for the Wild Things' island) Jonze builds ingeniously on the book's basic story, with the help of writer Dave Eggers, to explore the mind of a lonely child coping with life's emotional challenges. 12 year-old newcomer Max Records is charming as the film's wolf suit-wearing hero, Max, while James Gandolfini, Lauren Ambrose and Forest Whitaker help provide voices for the six huge but harmless monsters (who look exactly like their book counterparts). Music lovers will enjoy a soundtrack by Karen O of alternative rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Horton the kindly elephant (voiced by Jim Carrey) has his life turned upside down when he thinks that he hears a voice coming from a speck of dust that no-one else can see. The voice in question belongs to the Whos, a tiny breed of people with their own society, led by the Mayor of Whoville (Steve Carell). Horton takes it upon himself to protect the Whos and their home, but this causes him nothing but problems as none of his neighbours can actually see the little folk, and so they don't believe that they exist - and the Mayor has a similar problem convincing the Whos of the existence of a giant altruistic elephant. Soon, everyone is asking if Horton has lost the plot? Will he give in to the ridicule, or will he stand by his motto, that "a person is a person, no matter how small"?
