In a remote Eastern European village at the beginning of the 20th century, ebullient timber merchant Jacob agrees to bankroll an ambitious young man's experiment with moving images. Little does he anticipate that this will lead to a discovery that revolutionises visual storytelling. Encouraged by Jacob and inspired by Anna, a young girl who's been sent to help him make moving images of village life, Motl Mendl goes on to become a famous film director in America. Forty years on, he reflects on his early life and the price he paid to fulfil his dreams. Directed by NT Artistic Director Nicholas Hytner, Nicholas Wright's follow-up to such hits as 'Vincent in Brixton' and 'The Reporter' explores the key role played by immigrants from Eastern Europe in creating US cinema's golden age.

This is the moment all Star Wars fans have been waiting for. The first episode of the greatest of all science fiction sagas has been given a 3D makeover by creator George Lucas to fully immerse viewers in its heart-pounding spectacle and emotional storyline. Originally released in 1999, 'The Phantom Menace' introduces Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor in the role earlier made famous by Sir Alec Guinness). They rescue Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman) of Naboo from the evil clutches of the Trade Federation and flee to the desert planet of Tatooine. Here they befriend a young slave boy called Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) in whom the Force appears to be strong. He's also a promising pilot and engineer who has created his own droid, C-3PO. In the early 20th century, well-educated young Russian Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) is delivered to the clinic of Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) near Zurich. Howling, traumatised and sexually repressed, this new patient presents quite a challenge to the young married psychiatrist. Using the 'talking cure' pioneered by Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), he uncovers the childhood origins of her dysfunction. The case leads to a developing friendship between Freud and his acolyte. But inspired by libertine Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel), Jung eventually gives in to his desire for Sabina, violating the doctor/patient relationship. Adapted from his own stage play by Christopher Hampton, 'A Dangerous Method' explores the early years of psychoanalysis through the compelling story of the woman who came between its great pioneers. It's an impressively adept period drama from the great Canadian director David Cronenberg.

Though all of Wagner's Ring cycle operas can stand quite happily on their own too feet, once you've enjoyed 'Siegfried (screening on 5 November), you'll certainly not want to miss the following 'Gotterdammerung' (which translates�as 'Twilight of the Gods'). Time is nearly up for Wotan and his pals in Valhalla, but against this ticking clock is the vexed subject of what will happen to the Ring itself - if it falls into the wrong hands, the world will be doomed to evil rule. Cue a bewitching plot of magic potions, deception, betrayal, deaths and funerals - not to mention the most blazing finale to any opera you will ever witness.
As with Lepage's production of 'Siegfried', James Levine conducts. Admirers of Wagner should also note that complete Ring Cycles will be scheduled at the Met for April and May 2012.

So she sets off to the south-east of the country for a three month investigation into the stories behind them. Little does she know that she's also embarking on the most emotional journey of her life. On arrival in Diyarbakir, Sumru crosses paths with a number of characters. These include Ahmet (Durukan Ordu), a young man who sells counterfeit DVDs on the streets, and Antanik, the aging warden of a crumbling church. As a result, she finds she must confront a long-buried agony from her own past. Writer/director Ozcan Alper's follow-up to his award-winning 'Autumn' is a powerful, beautifully filmed road movie with a romantic twist and a political edge.

This early Verdi operatic masterpiece deservedly reaches a wider audience - with a little help from the Met.
It's a mystery why 'Ernani' hasn't become one of Verdi's best known operas. It's got a fast-moving plot with some neat little twists, and, as is almost always the case with Verdi, music that ranges from to memorably exquisite to simply thrilling. The action all takes place in early 16th-century Spain where Ernani, once a nobleman, has fallen on hard times and has turned to banditry. He is intent on getting revenge on his foe of old, King Carlos, who just so happens to love the same girl as him. Now add to the mix Silva, a nobleman whose dashed hopes of marrying Elvira rapidly turn to bitterness. Among all the intrigues, duels and duets, there are some really heart-warming moments, and it's not hard to see why the Met has consistently championed this opera since 1903.

Massenet's famed operatic tale of a girl who's just that little bit too attractive...
Operatic observations about the perils of trying to climb the society ladder don't come much sharper than this. Manon (Anna Netrebko), a young woman who has little trouble attracting the attentions of men, is devoted to Le Chevalier des Grieux (Piotr Beczala). But her head is all too easily turned to the finer things in life. Given that des Grieux is unlikely ever to provide her with those, not least when he heads off to take holy orders, what is a girl to do? Massenet's charming 1884 opera deftly portrays the various characters around her - the modest, the flashy, the pious, the pompous, the straight, the devious - that make the vulnerable and simple Manon's world so much more complicated that it ought to be. The result is one of the greatest of all French operas.

Verdi's best-known opera is graced by one of its most moving heroines.
At the centre of the action is the young nobleman Alfredo. He falls for a courtesan called Violetta - never a brilliant idea in 19th-century Parisian society, but particularly so if your father is a disapproving stuffed shirt of the worst kind. She also happens to be stricken with consumption, and as her coughing increases throughout the opera, we know that there can only be one way that this plot is going to end. Violetta, played here by the brilliant French soprano Natalie Dessay, is lovely throughout, but Alfredo wavers in his devotion - only to come to his senses too late. Blessed with some of Verdi's best arias and choruses, including the hugely famous 'Drinking song', it's all intensely moving. If this gorgeous story of doomed love doesn't get you welling up at the end, then absolutely nothing will.

But when he meets the Sheikh's beautiful English representative, Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt), his cynicism subsides and he begins to embrace the possible in all aspects of his life. Adapted from Paul Torday's novel by 'Slumdog Millionaire' screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, this charming story is directed by Lasse Hallstrom, who gave us 'Chocolat'.
