Winner of the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress and nominated for six Oscars - including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress - this is an intense but uplifting drama of an abused teenager striving for a better life.

At the age of just sixteen Clareece 'Precious' Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) has already suffered unimaginable hardships. Abused by her mother (Mo' Nique), she grows up poor, angry, obese and illiterate in a crumbling tenement block. Pregnant for the second time by her own absent father, and threatened with expulsion from school, Precious is trapped in a life of misery. Even when she is offered the chance of an alternative education, her mother tells Precious that she is too stupid to do anything other than eke out a living on welfare. But Precious takes a chance with the Each One/Teach One initiative, where she is mentored by the patient and caring Ms Rain (Paula Patton). As the heart-breaking consequences of her upbringing are revealed, Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness towards light, love and dignity.
