The king of disaster movies shows us what the end of the world will look like - and he's even put a date on it.

After blowing up the White House in Independence Day and turning New York City into a giant freezer in The Day After Tomorrow, Roland Emmerich is back at his apocalyptic best and ready to give you nightmares. We're three years in the future - 21 December 2012, to be exact - and, just as the ancient Mayan civilisation predicted, the world is in peril. A series of cataclysmic events is about to hit the planet where it hurts and take out most of its six billion inhabitants. Meteors start falling from the sky, colossal earthquakes wipe out entire cities and gigantic tsunamis clear everything in their path. With the world's governments woefully underprepared, it's left to a handful of survivors to fight for their lives... and for the future of mankind.

Screenplay: Roland Emmerich, Harald Kloser

Distributor: Sony

You should see it because: Emmerich serves up a series of breathtaking disasters that will leave you gasping for air - and hoping that the Mayans got it wrong!
