One of the best-loved fantasy films of all time returns to the big screen, released by the BFI in a new digital restoration.
Originally released in 1939, The Wizard of Oz begins in the monochrome world of Kansas but bursts into colour when Dorothy's house is uprooted by a tornado and lands in the magical land of Oz. Here Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog Toto encounter three new friends - the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), the Cowardly Lion (Burt Lahr) and the Tin Man (Jack Haley). The Wizard of Oz was one of the most lavish productions ever made in Hollywood. With this new digital cinema release, audiences will at last be able to experience the film as it was always meant to be seen. Working from the original Technicolor negatives, the team at Warner Bros peeled away generations of dirt and debris to reveal amazing image clarity and breath-taking colour.
Screenplay: Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, Edgar Allan Woolf
