In 1954, US marshals Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are ordered to investigate the disappearance of a patient from a mental hospital on Shutter Island, a remote outcrop some 11 miles off the coast of Boston. When a hurricane hits Shutter Island, more inmates manage to escape and Teddy becomes trapped.
